There are thousands of free Kindle books in the Amazon Kindle Store. How do you locate them?

Kindle eBooks, in general, are cheaper than traditional books. Case in point, a paperback copy of Water for Elephant costs over $8.75, while the Kindle edition costs $5. However, the cost of eBooks can considerably add up. By getting free Kindle books, Kindle owners can save prime dollars. Finding free eBooks for Kindle is not difficult if you know where to look into.

The Amazon Kindle Store: An Overview

The Kindle Store was launched in 2007 as a built-in feature of the Kindle 1, making Amazon the first major book retailer to be integrated into a digital reader. The Kindle Store was also the first to offer less-than-60-second download of digital books.

When the Amazon ebookstore was launched, it had 88,000 paid and free titles (this number excludes the free pre-1923 classics). The number increased to over 275,000 in late 2008, then to over 500,000 in spring 2010. Currently, the Kindle Store has about 725,000 titles. About 610,000 of these cost $9.99 or less. Some are even free.

Finding Free Kindle Books in the Amazon eBookstore

The Kindle Store has 1.8 million pre-1923 classics, and you can download any of them for free. You can also find $0 Kindle books published post-1923 (not public domain books) using the following steps:

  • Sort by price. From the Amazon home page, go to Kindle Store, then type “free kindle books” into the search box. On the top right corner of the search results page, there’s a “sort items” drop box. Click on the drop box and sort listing option by “Price: Low to High”. Amazon will then display a list of books starting with $0.
  • Check the top 100 free Kindle books list. Amazon maintains a list of top 100 free and paid Kindle books. However, the listing is changed hourly, so the books that are free one minute may not be free the next.
  • Visit Kindle Listmania. Some Kindle owners make the effort to scour Amazon and list down the free Kindle books they find or like. Listmania is found on the lower left corner of the Kindle Store search results page. Type “free kindle books” into the Listmania search box to find free kindle books as listed by Kindle owners.

A Note to International Kindle Owners on Free Kindle Books

Amazon sets different prices for books for owners in the US and those living outside the US. International Kindle owners may have to pay a set fee for downloads of books listed as free in Amazon US.

Free Kindle eBooks from Third-Party Stores

There are also many book sites offering free eBooks for Kindle devices. Project Gutenberg, Planet Ebook, and Manybooks are some of the many places you can check for free Kindle eBooks.
